About Dr. Van Allen

I am an assistant professor of psychology at Campbell. I have the exciting job of being a “shared” faculty member, which means that I get to teach at Main Campus as well as at the extended campuses and online. Additionally, I am the online advisor for Campbell’s new online psychology degree program. I spent most of my life in New Mexico and Virginia. I attended college at both James Madison University and George Mason University in VA, and I received my Master’s and PhD in social psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park. I am interested in a broad range of research topics in social, cognitive, and health psychology. Some specific areas of interest include cognitive aspects of creativity and decision-making as well as stereotype threat. I am also interested in health perceptions, health disparities, and health promotion in underrepresented groups. Currently, I live in Fuquay Varina with my husband, Brian, and my three children—Mason (6), Paisley (4), and Piper (2), and they definitely keep me busy outside of work! As a family, we enjoy traveling and spending time with friends and family. I also enjoy gardening, crafting, and taking my kids to the park.
